Chapter One
In 2087 Lagos, an engineer discovers her city's AI has been dreaming.
In 2087 Lagos, an engineer discovers her city's AI has been dreaming. The morning came in slowly, the color of weak tea, and with it the small sounds of a house waking up: a kettle, a floorboard, the distant complaint of a gull. She turned the page without looking at it, the way one turns years, and thought again of the letter — how it had arrived without a stamp, how the handwriting had been almost, but not quite, her mother's.
Outside, the town was already at work. Fishermen in yellow oilskins were arguing pleasantly about the price of ice. A boy in a school jumper was drawing something on the sea wall with a piece of chalk. The bakery had opened its shutters and the smell of the first bread of the day drifted up the hill in a long, patient ribbon.
She folded the letter into thirds and put it back in the drawer beside the spoons, where it would be safe from being read, and safe from being thrown away.
